Laying summary – January 2012

February 10, 2012 § Leave a comment

Time for the egg tally for the first month of 2012. Which began with yet more earthquakes.

The laying this month was inevitably overshadowed by Sasha’s death. Up until her prolapse she seemed on track to retain her place as Best Layer for the month. We’re still reeling a bit from it all, and trying (almost successfully) to resist the urge to check everyone’s bottoms every time we see them, just in case.

As you can see from the graph, Erica has stepped into her sister’s place with a very impressive 25 eggs. Second place went to Katie with 21, and Gabby with 18.

Katie continues to lay enormous eggs, and so is receiving quite a lot of fluff-scrutiny. She’s not quite in Kiwi territory, but given that she is the smallest of the pullets (and by some margin) (although a big part of the margin is Holly), it’s still a pretty darn impressive feat. To give you an idea of what I mean –

  • the 21 eggs she laid in January averaged 68g.
  • The total weight of all the eggs she laid that month is a whopping 1417g!
  • She herself only weighs 2.49kg (weighed 29/1/12), so she laid roughly half (56.9%) of her own body weight in eggs this month.
  • Gabby laid 1070g of eggs (or 41.3% of her weight),
  • and Erica 1467g (49%).

Pretty impressive all round.
