Christchurch City Council, I love you!
More in a sense of “well lets be certain” than in any real hope, we had a search of the council website for the regulations about keeping animals on your property.
They’ve changed the guidelines! You can now keep roosters, as long as they don’t make a nuisance of themselves and you prevent them crowing before 7 am! (See here.)
I keep hearing horror stories from people on BYP about councils making it harder and harder to keep chooks in an urban environment. (Hell, some of them have to battle to do so in semi-rural places!) But the Christchurch City Council has gone the opposite direction, and are actually encouraging people to do this sort of thing. From “maximum of six hens; no roosters” to “no limit as long as they aren’t a nuisance; no roosters”; to “just don’t let them become a nuisance, and try to stop them crowing before 7 am”.
How good is this city?!
