Slowly but surely, we’re getting there with Poppy. This is the fourth night she’s spent with the others. They still give her hell if she doesn’t go in to bed quite early – it’s a matter of getting through the doorway before Frida and Lily start their to-ing and fro-ing. Once a pecking session starts, even Bessie may join in. But Poppy’s not so panicked by it now, and just tucks her head down and gets the hell out of the way.
At the moment we’ve got the divider back across the bottom end of the Winter Garden, to give Poppy a separate little enclosed area. I get up at first light to let them all out and put Poppy in her end – for breakfast, and any time when they don’t have access to the whole orchard area. Probably not necessary, but I worry that if they are all awake and in a confined space, things might get nasty. So until bedtimes get a little more civilised, that’s what we’ll do.
I have to admit though, I do fantasize about staying in bed in the morning, snoozing and reading …
